Installing an automatic lawn sprinkler system is actually some pretty tough work, and not as easy as some people think, but it is also a very rewarding task. My favorite part of the whole project is when I first push the button on the controller and watch the sprinklers come up; it’s like magic! Many people may view this type of project as a complicated task, but it doesn’t have to be. While it may not be too complicated for you, it is going to require some dedication and will power to see the project all the way through to a successful completion.
If you have the proper instructions and right resources, then installing a sprinkler system can be a lot of fun! It is a task that can be accomplished by an average man or woman who is in good health and physical shape. Having step-by-step instructions, the right tools, materials, and the willingness to get out and sweat a little is all you need to install your own fully automatic sprinkler system.
If you are not into yard work, then this do-it-yourself project may not be for you. Hiring a professional irrigation contractor for the job instead of installing the system yourself is the way to go if you are not interested in a few days (or more) of good old fashioned hard work. The most back-breaking part of the project is the physical digging and cleaning out of the trenches. Kneeling down and bending over is another task that can be hard on your body. Using a trencher can make the digging process quicker, but the operation of most of these machines also requires some rigid physical effort.
Many older irrigation contractors have back problems related due to do this work day in and day out, but if you’re just installing a lawn sprinkler system for your own home this should not be a problem unless you have existing back problems. Everyone knows that manual labor can be hard work so just use common sense to decide if this is the type of task that you can physically do yourself.
A big obstacle for many who are thinking about installing a lawn sprinkler system is actually learning how to design and assemble the system. Without the right knowledge and planning you are doomed to have a frustrating time and an inferior system. However there are many published books available as well as online tutorials that explain the process of designing and installing a lawn sprinkler system.
Do your research when looking for a resource to teach you how to do this because not all the information is suitable for the average homeowner or do-it-yourself guy (or gal). You don’t want to get a degree in water physics, or study for your local irrigation contractor exam so make sure to get a guide that focuses on a simplified residential irrigation design. Information that includes step-by-step plans and checklists are the best for any kind of do-it-yourself project.
Once your are equipped with the right information, tools, and materials then it is time to get to work! Your work begins long before you take your first shovel scoop. The planning phase of the project is crucial to building a quality irrigation system and doing so efficiently to save time and money. I would highly recommend getting an able-bodied friend or family member to assist you throughout the entire project. While this is something that you could do by yourself, it always helps to have a partner.
When scheduling or setting aside the amount of time you think it will take to complete this project from start to finish always make sure to give yourself extra time. I would say plan for an additional 25% to 50% to your time…no I’m not kidding! For example, if you think you can complete your system in 2 working days, you’d better plan on having at least 3 full days to dedicate to this project. No matter what you may think or someone may tell you there are numerous factors that could prolong the job. Things like weather conditions, needing extra materials, or even the underestimation of your physical strength are common things that make a job like this take longer than planned. It still happens to the professionals, although we normally already know this and account for it upfront.
Once you have completed your automatic sprinkler system and can turn it on by the timer, it is a very satisfying feeling. I’m one to take pride in my work, so even though I’ve literally installed hundreds of systems, I still get a wonderful feeling when it is complete. There’s just something about starting from scratch arranging numerous, different materials and turning it into a real product that will provide value for many years to come. I believe that you will feel the same way when building your own system. Five or ten years later when you’re enjoying a beautiful green yard, you will think back and remember all the effort that you put in.
